Booting

Wow who wants to wake up to this? I have been biking around town and noticing a lot more boots on cars. Parking in the LBC is hard enough and then to wake up to a orange boot on your car and a notice on the window. Well I wish the LBC would try and work on getting more parking spaces for us locals or even yet mark the street on 2nd between Falcon and Gaviota so people would park right.

All that Bike fees, fines and BS

So the chatter around the bicycle fees is off an running. But just so we are all up to date it appears the City Council voted unanimously Tuesday December 14, 2010 to have City Manager Pat West report within 30 days on the feasibility, costs and benefits of eliminating Long Beach's bicycle registration requirement. The proposal by Councilman Robert Garcia is intended to make the 35-year-old registration law only voluntary. There are other existing items on the books such as the warning bell fines that should be reviewed as well. It would be nice to have one place where all of us could review so we as bicyclists can stay informed. Let me know if anyone has a single source.

Read about the warning bell fine too

Long Beach Bicycle Registration Process
License Fee now $3.00
How do I obtain a bicycle license?
Bicycle licenses are issued every Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 12 noon at most fire stations in Long Beach. Although we make an effort to be in the station during those hours, Saturday and Sundays are regular work days for us therefore we have regularly scheduled training and company business to attend to. Note that these locations do NOT sell bicycle licenses: Fire Headquarters, Beach Operations, Fire Station 6, Fire Station 16, Fire Station 20, Fire Station 21 and Fire Station 24.

The cost for a license is $3.00 for each bicycle licensed. If available, please bring proof of purchase to make registration easier.

WARNING BELL Source LA Times November 13, 1986
Long Beach- Council Rings in Bike Law
Bicycle riders who stray onto city sidewalks will be required to carry a warning bell or face a fine of up to $100, according to an ordinance approved Tuesday by the City Council.
The ordinance, which becomes effective Dec. 19, requires riders to equip their bicycles with a bell or horn capable of being heard up to 100 feet away if they want to ride on sidewalks. The bell is to be sounded when bicycle riders are passing pedestrians on sidewalks. In all instances, bicycle riders are required to yield the right of way to pedestrians when riding on sidewalks, according to the ordinance.

Taking Care of the Homeless

Once again out searching the streets for the next great blog. I found myself at Bixby Park once again. I came across about 10 homeless people waiting in line for a cup of hot coffee and some cookies. I then approached a gentlemen named Rod who told me that every Tuesday they try and get to the park around 11:30am to pass out coffee and cookies and some clothes to the homeless and they also have a prayer and communion. I then asked Rod which ministry he was from, Christ Chapel Long Beach. I like the fact that they are trying to take care of the homeless. But then there is the polices side of this they don't want the homeless hanging out at the parks so they run them off. We have many resources for the homeless in long beach. I believe we should direct them in the right direction and keep our streets safe.

Keep the GLB Beautiful!

Dear Mr. Dog owner. You lost some dog poop in my front yard and every other front yard from the looks of things. Wanna come claim it. They do make little bags to help you out, use them. I own a dog too and have no problem picking up after her. I do give a damn and if you talk to your neighbors they care too. If you own a dog do the world a favor pick up the poop. It only takes 5 seconds and very little skill. I know you can do it.

Rain and the 710

Long Beach

Long Beach is wet wet wet with the current rain conditions. Beware the 710 Southbound. Try the 22 instead. The 710 floods during the rainy season off and on. So check the local news for traffic updates and plan accordingly. Just get used to making the effort to check because if you get caught on the 710 you will find yourself being diverted off the freeway onto local streets or the 405.

Parking Problems

Long Beach parking is horrible. If you are new to the area beware the parking nightmare. If you have not rented a place yet and you own a car I would strongly recommend you find a home or apartment with a parking space or garage. This area is no joke when it comes to lack of parking and you will find out quickly that even if you spend an extra hundred bucks for a rental that includes a space you will same more than that each month on parking tickets. If you get 2 or 3 tickets you will find your car towed or booted. So if you ever stagger outside in the morning and panic that your car is not where you left it try the City customer service representative first at (562) 570-6822 between the hours of 7:30a.m. and 4:30p.m. PST.

Street sweeping

Those signs that line our streets notify you of when street sweeping will occur. Most new residents find themselves with a ticket or two because they just plain forget. After you get in the swing of things you will adapt to this ridiculous game of street sweeping or as some peeps call it “Citizens involuntary donations for Long Beach’s failed planning”. I invite you to bask in the early morning routine. You will see a street sweeper that often does not actually clean anything followed by a pack of hungry parking enforcement vehicles. It looks like a planned assault as they move out in the morning in a solid formation. Don’t hassle the meter maids it really is not their fault and they are doing their job after all but I encourage you to be proactive and read your street signs carefully.

My Fellow bikers

Motorcycles shall be parked with at least one wheel or fender touching the right-hand curb. A vehicle must face in the direction of normal traffic flow. For Motorcycles we do have our own parking spaces on most blocks but beware you cannot park in MARKED spaces that are not designated Motorcycle Parking. Again check those signs before you leave your ride.
