Beth Von Sands of S&Him

Q: How did you guys get started?
A: I originally started dj'ng in a female electroclash duo called
The ELECTROboobies. My husband D.C. would always be a part of every
gig that we played, be it from opening sets, closing sets, sound
engineer or even stepping in as the manager from time to time. The
ELECTROboobies became more of our production group to handle our
club we were throwing at Que Sera called Training Bra (it was free
entry with bra donations, we later donated the bra's to a small
African village for use in a censored national geographic
issue). That's when S&Him was formed, My husband and I started
playing together at Training Bra more and more. It seemed to make
sense, we played at the house together, we listen to the same music
together everyday, we play off each other and depend on the others
input while we play its never the same set twice...It's a blast!
Q: What inspires You?
A: We have been blessed by having a tight crew of amazing musicians
as friends. Over the last year, we have been throwing weekly dj
bbq's each and every Sunday. It 's inspiring to have a group of
like-minded people join together to throw down whatever track is
getting them going for that week. To have a group of friends get
together almost like clockwork every week and not only clicking with
whatever is being played that day at the bbq, whether it's Soul and
Funk being played by Dennis, Tech house by Dinnell or Techno from
the Droid Crews Dean Paul or Audio Injection. This has inspired us
so much, we had to start podcast called radio.vonsands.com just to
record some of the amazing sets being played at our little studio
here in Belmont. We have recorded our 3rd podcast about a week ago
with Dean Paul from Droid Behavior. Any chance to bbq, drink good
beer, and listen to great music on a Sunday..now we have a place to
store it once we record it. It never gets boring that's for sure!
Q: Artistic goals?
A: Keep Dj'ng and coming out with our own crazy one off remixes with
our friends. Refine our Death Metal Ukulele band ...ohhh yea and win
the lottery so we can afford all the crazy gear we need...
Q: age and interests?
A: I'm 30 DC is 39 ... interests as in something other than Dj'ng or
playing with music.....hmmm Id say Terror-oke (forcing your friends
on stage to a random song during karaoke) and Death Metal on our
Ukulele...
Q: Where do you guys DJ at in the LBC?
A: Mostly Que Sera but we've played just about every bar, warehouse,
loft party, museum and night club long beach has from the Pike to
the Prospector from V20 to Ripples..we've molested their mixer one
way or another...

MORE MUSIC
How long have you been together?
The band has been together in rough form, since 2000.
Various members have come and gone. Micah Panzich started the band.
Pete Tavera joined in 2004. Jon Husak took on drumming duties in
2009.
Adam Poe is the newest member, joining in 2010.
Who are your strongest influences?
The songwriting of the band is heavily influenced by performers and
songwriters such as: Townes Van Zandt, Merle Haggard, Guy Clark,
Waylon Jennings, The Flying Burrito Brothers (Hillman and Parsons),
Mike Stinson, Marty Stuart, The Rolling Stones, The Velvet
Underground, John Prine, Terry Allen, Bruce Springsteen, The
Band...Dolly Parton....Really, this could go all day..Our influences
are varied among band members. We may be influenced for their
musicianship, their recording process, their lifestyle or attitude,
their vocal, drumming or guitar sounds, or just their songwriting.
That being said, there are a ton of influences.
If I was new to the long beach area what would you recommend
a must see or must do?
I would go check out some live music. Either at the Prospector,
Alex's
Bar, The Que Sera, or the Pike. You will always find a quality act
at
one of these establishments. As well as you will be supporting
locally
owned businesses that care about the music scene. Not only that,
Long
Beach has a wide variety of very talented bands. The feeling of
camaraderie amongst the bands will often result in a lineup of very
different sounding bands, often eclectic and very developed in their
style. You wont find a more diverse, yet friendly-music scene
anywhere
in the country. There are also some great music festivals in the
summer that feature local and national acts.

Rahfee Zahkee

Meet Rahfee. He is a local live electronic beat performer and DJ. He gives his own spin and beat to create a reactive sound.
Q: How did I get started?
A: weird story really. I used to be a professional bassist with
three tours under my belt then one night I accidentally chopped off
my thumb trying to open a wine bottle( I had it reattached
thankfully). I felt lost not being able to play my bass during my
recovery so I felt I should dive into something that wouldn't
require my thumb as much so I got into DJing. After a while DJing
got too easy and basically became a job so I looked into to make
music live, and have full control over every aspect of it. So from
there I learned how to program controllers/DAW's and MIDI and now I
make music live with beat pads, chaos pads, and more.
Q:What inspires you?
A: so many things really. the major one being art and all its glory,
how you can manifest it and turn it upside down or whatever way you
like. Also this guy named Greg Lazcano who I met in high school that
has the ability to see music in colors and can play any instrument
and write entire symphonies in a matter of minutes, it really opened
my mind that it is possible to have complete control over music and
its capabilities.
Q: Artistic Goals
A: Not alot of people understand this but I really like where I am
with my music right now. I love performing local scenes so I can
actually talk and interact with people and my environment, I feel
huge stage performances take away from that. As far as my music, it
can always get more and more improved, almost everyday I program my
controllers more and more so I can do even more live. Like I had one
button that only did one thing, but over time I kept on programming
it so now that one button does like 45 things at once, it just keeps
expanding.
Q: self age interest
A: other than music my other interest would be visual arts such as
video/light djing, I've always wanted to get into that but never
seem to have enough time to be a musician as well as that, maybe one
day I'll do it on the side. I also have an interest in Law/Business
which I'm going to school for now. I also love traveling, I have
been all over Europe and even have my own place in Egypt, I actually
performed once at the biggest library in the world which is located
their.
